The Ulster Elks Men’s Volleyball team defeated Ballymun Patriots 3-0 at home on Sunday in their first match of the 2009-10 season.
The Ulster Elks were never behind in the first set and won it 25-22. The second set was much closer and tough side out offense extended the second set but Ulster Elks again won it 26-24 to pull out to a 2-0 set lead.
In the third set the Ulster Elks ran out comfortable winners 25-16 winning the match 3-0 with the Ulster Elk’s international scholar Paul Spittle showing his class as he racked up 17 kills on the day and led the Ulster team in scoring.
The Ulster Elks team was: #1 Adam Bell, #2 Mark Hazley, #3 Tom Barrett, #4 Nick Wright (coach), #5 Tom Napier, #7 Niall Maddan, #8 Mark Fulton (captain), #10 Paul Spittle, #17 Conor Doherty and #18 Wilson Greenlee (libero).
In the off-season the University of Ulster were able offer an international scholarship to the volleyball programme. This scholarship allows a non-eu student to come to the university to study a post-graduate course. The Ulster Elks volleyball team were able to attract Paul Spittle who played in the NCAA for the University of California Irvine. Paul continued to play volleyball in America after his graduation, playing for team Paul Mitchell in the USA nationals.
Paul joins the Elks team as an outside hitter and will strengthen the Varsity team as well as the All-Ireland Premier League team. The next game for the Elks is at home against Aer Lingus Jets on the 1st November with a warm up at 2pm.
