The Ulster Elks Men’s volleyball team, who before the match were 3rd in the All-Ireland Premier League, travelled to UCD early on Sunday knowing they had to win to keep the pressure on 1st place Aer Lingus and 2nd place ballymun.
UCD tool an early lead in the set and led throughout by as much as 5 points until the ulster elks drew within 1 point at 24-23 forcing the set to be extended. Ulster were a set point down at 26-25 when mark Hazley went back to serve. Hazley served the set out assisted by great blocking and transition offense by Adam Bell, Mark Fulton and Paul Spittle. Ulster eventually winning the 1st set 26-28.
In the 2nd set ulster again went behind to an early surge by UCD and were leading 16-11 when Hazley again went back to serve and ulster drew within 2 points. By the time it was Hazley’s turn to serve again the score was tight at 19-20. Â Steady serving and blocking allowed Ulster to score 6 unanswered points to take the 2nd set.
By this stage in the match Ulster were in full stride after their slow start and after they took a lead at 8-9 Ulster never gave up the lead and finished the set 12-25.
The win moves the ulster team up to 2nd place in the table after 1st placed Ballymun defeated Aer Lingus jets 3-0 on Saturday. 2nd placed Aer Lingus did not play.
