With team spirit and confidence quite high after putting in some exciting performances in their last few matches, Queen’s Men’s P32 team took to the court against CB Photo, a Limerick team two places ahead of them in the league. CB Photo fielded a full strength team despite having to travel so far, with two players former European National team members, but Queen’s had to make do without their starting opposite player due to his having to sit a College exam that morning.
The two teams took to the court after an exciting and noisy warm-up, with both teams showing their desire to win vital league points. Strong serving from Queen’s, Jesus Cordoba and Tom Fabian in particular, allowed the home team to take an early lead in the set and with numerous successful quick attacks from both Tom Fabian and Lucas Schaper, Queen’s ran out relatively easy winners 25:15.
Set 2 began with more strong serving from Queen’s but some thunderous outside hitting from CB Photo’s star outside hitter Max, allowed the Limerick side to creep ahead. This got both teams focused again and the match swung from side to side, with neither team able to take a run of points. Some superb defensive team pick-ups and opposite hitting from Queens’ Han Lu kept the home side in the game and strong hitting through the middle again from Lucas finally allowed Queen’s to take the 2nd set with a hard fought 28:26 scoreline.
This win buoyed the home side and took a bit of wind from the sales of CB Photo, and the 3rd set was not as exciting to watch. Queen’s were able to get into an early lead and they kept this up throughout, running out 25:20 winners, taking the match 3:0. Coach Chris Grant said, “This was a good performance from us despite not being able to field a full strength team. Our team defense was the best it’s been all season and captain Lucas Schaper through the middle and Han Lu in the opposite position were inspirational throughout. It’s great to see the hunger for the game still there despite it being a hard slog of a season for us so far.”
