Last weekend, 5th-6th June, Queen’s Volleyball club were represented in the Beach Volleyball Student Cup in Bournemouth, where the two Queens pairings finished in 5th place and 9th place.
The tournament consisted of a total of 53 teams from Universities across Britain. The teams completed first in pool stages before being seeded and placed in a single elimination competition.
The Queen’s pairing of Jeff Scott and Jonathan Workman got off to a great start on Saturday morning winning all their pool matches and were seeded 5th, winning a bye to the round of 32 in the single elimination tournament. They played this match on Saturday evening against a strong London side and were able to secure a 2-1 victory. On Sunday morning the Scott/Workman pairing started the day with a strong 2-0 win to secure their place in the quarter finals. Unfortunately, after a long 3 set game, Queen’s lost to a Loughborough pairing due to too many errors and finished the weekend in 5th place.
The second Queen’s pairing of Patrick Crooks and Brian Cox finished 2nd in their pool on the Saturday morning. In both the round of 64 and the round of 32 the Crooks/Cox pairing came across some very strong competition. In both cases the team lost the first set but fought extremely well to go on to win both games 2-1. Unfortunately the Queen’s lads came across the GB pairing and eventual winners Chris Gregory and Seain Cook in the round of 16. Patrick and Brian put up a great fight only losing the second set 21-17 but lost the game 2-0 and finishied the tournament in 9th place.
