Saturday 10th July saw the NIVA beach tour head to Ballyhome beach for the Bangor Open. With more new faces, and the top 10 players all present, the competition at the beach events is getting better and better as the season goes on. The weather held out for most of the day, but when the men’s competition reached the semi finals, heavy rain stopped play. McKnight/Hunter, Scott/Park, Workman/Surgenor and tour leaders Greenlee/Bell all shared the points.
In the early stages of the Bangor Open, Ranganathan/ Thiphavong and Malherbe/Vasilev lost 2 consecutive games and were put out of the competition.
Greenlee/Bell won their first game, but then lost 2-0 to the strong pairing of McKnight/Hunter. McKnight/Hunter won 2 consecutive games, and were the first team through to the semi finals.
Scott/Park also won 2 games on the trot, narrowly defeating Wright/Workman 11-15 in the 3rd set to progress to the semi finals. Wright/Workman had another chance to make it to the semi finals, although they were defeated again in the 3rd set by Workman/Surgeoner.
The final semi final spot was between Greenlee/Bell and Wisniewski/Moore, with Greenlee/Bell coming out on top with only a 2 point difference in each set.
As the tournament was stopped at the semi-final stage the tanking points for the top 4 places will be distributed equally between the semi final teams.
This leaves the Beach Tour Ranking very tight at the top, with Wilson Greenlee, Adam Bell, Jeff Scott, David Park and Jonathan Workman all in for a shout for the top spot.
The final competition will take place on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th August in Portrush.
Thanks to Nick Wright for organisation of the tournament, as well as Corona for sponsorship of the winner prizes, and North Down council for the use of the beach.
