Northern Ireland’s #10 Adam Hunter lead the scoring for both teams with 13 kills from 24 swings and 1 ace as NI defeated England North 2-1.
NI won the first set comfortably 25-15 but England North picked up their game in the second set and were ahead towards the end of the set but started to miss crucial serves to allow NI to stay in touch. An Ace serve by England North gave them the all important two point cushion at 23-21. A setter dump by NI’s #9 Ferencz drew the teams level at 24 each but a kill in the middle and an ace serve by England North’s #6 Sinclair gave England the set and extended the match into a deciding third set.
England North won the first three points but NI won the next four! NI had a two point advantage at the changeover leading 8-6. NI were able to build a four points lead at 11-7 and the teams were both able to side out but NI had a comfortable three points margin and won the set 15-9 and the match 2-1.
NI Head Coach Chris Grant said after the game “It has taken eighteen months of hard work to encourage the boys realise they can play volleyball both as individuals and as a team. Once the skills have been perfected the mental strength training a match practice kicked in and then it was up to all the coaching staff to ensure our tactics were correct going into each match”.
“Four wins out of four is a great testament to the amount of hard work everyone involved in the programme has put in”.
