Northern Ireland U17 Boys remain unbeaten after three matches with a close 2-1 win over Scotland West.
NI had a great start to their the match as they built up an early 0-4 lead. Scotland West then reduced the deficit to 7-8 at the first technical timeout and were able to carry their momentum through to win the first set comfortably 25-17.
NI were pushing hard in the second set, trying to extend the match to a third set and were leading 22-23 towards the end of the set. Scotland West came back however and had a match point at 25-24. A side out kill, an block and an ace serve gave NI the win in the second set 25-27 and sent the match to a deciding third set to 15 points.
At the start of the third set both teams were trading points until Scotland West lead 7-4. NI were able to trim the Scotland lead to just 1 point with great blocking from NI #9 David Ferencz. The score at the change around was 8-7 to Scotland West.
Good offense from both side-out and transition play allowed NI to pull away from Scotland. NI finished the set strongly winning the third set 11-15 and the match 1-2.
NI captain #1 Ryan Caddell said after the game “We were quite nervous going into the game but throughout the match we just tried to push on and kept fighting. Our match against England North is a huge game and a win will guarentee a spot in the final”.
Northern Ireland’s #12 Zolt Numeth from North Regional College in Antrim led all scoring on both teams with 14 kills from 29 atempts and 2 ace serves. He hit .480 fro the match compared to a NI team average of .340. Scotland West’s #4 Andrew McGregor from Carluke High School led the Scotland team with 10 points from 25 attempts and 1 ace serve.
