Richhill Raiders got their league campaign off to a winning start against Ballymoney Blaze 2nds on Wednesday night. It was the first ever competitive game for the Richhill team and all the players were hoping for a good performance.
The 1st set saw a confident start for the raiders, with their opposite hitter Peter Lundy performing from the start, allowing the team to take an early lead. Ballymoney veteran Kevin Uprichard made life difficult for the Raiders middle blockers with his setting experience, but in the end spectators witnessed a comfortable set win for the raiders, lead by Captain Mark Fulton, of 25-15.
The second set saw a similar start to the first set. The Ballymoney defence struggled with the Raiders strong serving, and found themselves trailing by 5 points in the middle of the set. The consistent blocking of the Blaze team was overcome by the attacking of the Raiders to allow them to finish out the set 25-15.
The third set was a more shaky set for the home team. Blaze put together some good plays, keeping themselves in the set at 9-8. Raiders then increased their work rate to head into the lead. Strong blocking from the Raiders middles prevented the young Blaze team from winning many points. The game came to a close with a pin point pass and a set to the middle to give the Raiders a 25-15, 25-15, 25-13, 3-0 win.
Richhill Play their next game away to Aztecs Warriors on Thursday 14th October at 8pm in Portadown College where they hope to continue their winning start.
