Northern Ireland Under 14 Girls Poised for major tournament.

The Northern Ireland Under 14 Girls squad preparations are well under way in order to compete at the English Inter Regionals, which commence on 26th May 2017 in Kettering, England.

The squad comprises of 10 girls who have been rigorously selected via several trial sessions in Portadown and Ballymoney. Head Coach Dr Ian Walker said that this is only the second Under 14 team we have ever developed at international level with our last attempt two years ago earning a highly commendable top five position from 14 UK teams. Many of the athletes from that squad went on to represent at Under 16 level showing that the program reaps rewards for the girls later on. Walker commented, “we have some excellent young players coming through our clubs and schools. The assistance that Craigavon Aztecs and Ballymoney Blaze have given us has been amazing.”

Coaches Ian Walker and Claire Scott admit that the going will be tough in the headquarters of Volleyball England but our girls are very determined to go and compete to a good level. Walker comments, “we have had several practice matches against much older and tougher opposition and the girls have not been found wanting. We have three girls in the squad who are only in Year 9 at school so they are competing a whole year early. To compete at this level at age 12, 13 and 14 is a major achievement for the girls and no matter what the results will be, Claire and I are incredibly proud of each and every girl and thankful to their parents for their commitment to the program. Many parents are making their way to Kettering to support over the Bank Holiday weekend. One of the things that have stood out for me has been the leadership shown in the squad from girls of such a young age.

We would like to thank Northern Ireland Volleyball for their support of the program and in particular Johnny McClenaghan for his assistance in helping us with the logistical difficulties in getting to Kettering.
