Ballymoney Blaze first team got their league campaign off to a flying start with an away victory against Aztecs seconds team at Portadown College.
The Blaze boys hit the ground running in set one with David Park delivering a variety of sets to Jeff Scott and Matthew Bertenshaw on the wings to get an early lead. With confident passing from Aaron McKendry and quick paced attacks from Luke Pollock in the middle Blaze finished set one with ease winning 25 - 11.
The Aztecs boys settled into the match at the beginning of set two with some extremely difficult serving. Some excellent blocking from Blaze’s Patrick Parke and clever attacks from Ross Fallows kept the score neck and neck until Matthew Bertenshaw stepped up and served six in a row. Aztecs were unable to close this gap again and Blaze finished set two winning 25 – 19.
Set three started very much in Aztecs favour. Some well-placed tips and difficult serves saw the home side take an early 9-5 lead. At this point new Blaze member John Robb lost all sympathy for his former teammates on the other side of the net and brought Blaze back into contention with loads of quick middle attacks. With Blaze back in control they were able to storm on and finish set three 25 – 19 and the match 3 – 0.
A big thank you to all those who came to watch and especially those who refereed and scored at the match. Blaze continue their league campaign on Monday with an away match to Queens at the PEC Belfast at 8.00pm
