The Ulster Jordanstown Men’s Volleyball team stunned the unbeaten Richhill Raiders team with a 15-4 win in the deciding fifth set.
Ulster started the match off in style winning the first set 25-15. Richhill bounced back winning the second set equally as comfortably 14-25. In the third set Ulster played much better but poor passing and hitting errors allowed Richhill to win the set 19-25.
In the fourth set Ulster looked beaten. Down 2-1 in sets and behind 7-20 with Richhill only needing 5 points to win the set and the match, Ulster stepped up and Ulster’s #10 Niall Maddden served 3 points to close the lead to 11-20. A sideout by Ulster off a Wilson Greenlee serve allowed Ulster #16 Conor Doherty to go back and serve 10 points in a row to close the gap and ultimately take a 1 point lead in the set. Ulster never gave up this lead and were able to level the match by winning the fourth set 25-23. Ulster won 18 of the last 21 points in the fourth set.
In the deciding fifth set Ulster were able to maintain their momentum by winning the first 8 points of the set. The score was 10-0 before Richhill were able to win a point but with a 10 point lead in the set Ulster were able to hold onto their lead and trade sideout points with Richhill and win the set 15-4, and the match 3-2.
Ulster captain Nick Wright said after the game “The whole team played really hard, especially with the comeback in the fourth set. The guys just never gave up and to win against one of the league favourites is great.”
Ulster Jordanstown now travel to Ballymoney on Wednesday night for their third match in less than a week.
