1st set 16-25
Right from the beginning Aztecs serves caused North Down some problems, Sorcha Maguire and captain Michelle Diffin contributing towards an Aztecs 17-11 lead. During this early period of the match there was some notable great play from North Down’s newest player Agatha Rutkowska who is already showing after just 2 competitive matches that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. North Down did their best to get back into the game with some great pick-ups and blocking but Aztecs finished the set off winning 25-16
2nd set 21-25
The second set was a much closer affair, with points being exchanged like for like at the beginning. Some great blocking from Cait Donnelly (who was showing no effects of jet lag having flown home from England earlier that day) and North Down were up 10-7. Aztecs made an inspired Timeout and with more strong serving, this time from Sarah Louise Lowe pulled the set back to 12-12. NDL produced some fine play with a mixture of great defensive and offensive play and with Zoe Moore starting to hit cross court built another lead at 19-16. Another time-out from Aztecs and the same result as before! The deficit now reduced and the set in the balance at 20-20. They eventually closed the set off 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead into the 3rd set.
3rd set 22-25
This was another close set throughout the first 4 rotations with neither team being able to take a firm hold on the set. Then Monika Pyza produced a fine display of serves giving the ladies a 13-10 lead. Aztecs fought back once again after yet another inspired time-out to level the scores at 14-14. With some fine hitting from both sides, some more great pick-ups and some more great blocking, one in particular from Elaine Cunningham the points were exchanged once again with the scores 21-20 in Aztecs favour. Sorcha’s hitting proved too strong at the end and Aztecs closed the 3rd set out at 25-22 and win the match 3-0.
