In their first league match of the season Ulster Coleraine defeated Aztecs Warriors with a 3-0 victory.
Ulster Coleraine started anxiously but gained confidence after narrowly taking the first set. Both teams started slowly and Aztecs took the lead due to poor serving and unforced errors from Ulster Coleraine, however aggressive serving from Kerry Smyth helped close the gap and the Coleraine Girls went on to win the first set 25-23.
UUC were clearly dominant in the second set. A combination of successful serves and forceful hits helped Coleraine take the lead and extend it throughout the set. Solid defense from Lauren Ramage gave Coleraine a solid platform for Becky Rankin to set her attacks from. Becky isn’t normally a setter which make her superb preformance even more impressive.
In the third set Ulster Coleraine started strongly with a great run of serves from Becky Rankin and Jessica Currie blocked well preventing the Aztecs using their middles effectively. This gave Ulster Coleraine a great lead but Aztecs defended well with Libero Rebecca Archer playing exceptionally throughout the match. Tara Nicholl raised her game in the final set, serving, passing and attacking fantastically to keep her team on top. Ulster Coleraine were able to keep hitting hard and in and in the end were too strong for the Craigavon team.
This was a great way to kick off to the season for Ulster Coleraine, the team gelled and played well as a team considering it was there first match together. They are looking forward to their next game against Ballymoney Blaze. A big thankyou goes out to the Referees, officials and supporters.
