Northern Ireland Senior Men kicked off the tournament win a 3-0 win against Ireland on Saturday 19th March. But Scotland defeated both Ireland and Northern Ireland 3-0 on Sunday 20th to take the tournament win.
Northern Ireland – Ireland was the first match of the tournament held at the University of Ulster at Jordantown. NI were able to get away to a 5-0 lead at the start of the first set and never gave up their lead with strong hitting and blocking from the middle blockers, Adam Bell and Robert Nicholson and comfortably won the set 25-16. In the second set NI got off to an early 15-7 lead but a spirited Ireland faught hard to get back into the set at 17-15. The comeback was shirt lived though and NI were able to close out the set winning 25-19.
The third set was much like the first two as NI got off to an early 5-0 lead and again never gave up the lead to Ireland to win the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
In the second match of the tournament the experienced Scotland defeated Ireland 3-0. In the first set Scotland were able to demonstrate their dominance with a convincing 25-7 win. Ireland rallied in the second set but Scotland were able to serve and block with confidence and take the second set 25-15 and the third set 25-12.
With one win each it was winner takes all when Northern Ireland took on Scotland in the final match of the tournament. It was Scotland who got off to the better start winning the first set 18-25. Stalward Alan Workman came off the bench to give the home team some much needed experience as NI fought hard in the second set. There was rarely more than a couple of points in the set and the teams were tied at 24-24 requiring either team to win by two clear points. Scotland’s captain #4 Krawczyk went back and gave his team the required two points from the service line as he served out the set 24-26.
In the third set NI continued to fight hard in what was an entertaining match for all but it was not enough and Scotland won the third set 19-25 and the match 0-3.
