Queens Ladies eliminate Ulster Jordanstown on their way to the Celtic Cup final

The Queen’s Ladies volleyball team demonstrated why it’s the nation’s top ranked team this Wednesday the 11th of May 2011, sweeping the visiting University of Ulster Jordanstown Ladies team. Queens Ladies never trailed in the match, defeating their rival 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 to put themselves in the driver’s seat for the final match for the Celtic League title.

The first set started very strong for the Queens Ladies. The setter Manuela Baldan secured good starting point advantage (12-4) thanks to her excellent serving. Midway in the first set outsides Joanna Wiezowska and Irena Mihneva performed very strong hitting. Substitute Sarah Landstreet came in to finish the set and the team jumped out to a 25 – 13 win.

The Queens Ladies carried the momentum from the first set into the second one. The opposite Keissy Perez that has recently joined the team troubled the Jordanstown passers with some precise serving and gave Queens massive advantage. Sub Tina Debeljak came in play and participated in few interesting attacks at the net. The excellent communication between setter Manuela Baldan and both middles Claire Dowey and Virginie Boidron led to many straight kills at the net. And with a precise block Claire Dowey closed the set at 25 – 21.

Queens dominated at the start of set three as well. Once again serving proved to be one of the main strengths for the team and more particular Joanna Wiezowska’s starting serve run. The teams sided out at 12-7 when Kay Gemmert and Sarah Landstreet replaced the outsides Wiezowska and Mihneva. The Queens Ladies kept the pressure on and excellent reactions and digs by the libero Juliette Bonet took the set to 20-16. Queens’ coach had introduced Kay Gemmert for her defensive skills but she also contributed few smart points at the net to take Queens 25 – 18.

The Queens ladies would like to thank referees Vincent Ramirez and Tomas Fabian, along with scorers Lukasz Borowiecki, Anette Wilderotter and Elaine Cunningham for their support at the game and all way through the season. It is highly appreciated!

The team will play their next and final game at 1pm on the 22nd of May, Sunday versus the Scottish League winner at the University of Ulster Jordanstown Sports Centre. Please come and show your support!
