Great Britain’s Denise Johns and Lucy Boulton lost in three sets to USA’s Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in a tightly fought semi final clash at the London Prepares test event on Horse Guards Parade this morning.
Going into the match the GB pair were underdogs against the tournament favourites from America who are currently placed third in the FIVB world rankings. However the Britons pushed their American rivals all the way, taking the second set before eventually going down to a 13-21, 21-17, 10-15 defeat.
In the presence of another full house – including five times Olympic Champion Steve Redgrave – at the London 2012 Olympic venue Boulton and Johns once again stepped up their performance level to compete with one of the best pairs in the world.
Lucy Boulton said: “In the first set our game plan wasn’t really working, but we adapted it in the second set and it obviously worked as we took the second set. We couldn’t quite do it in the third set but we’re pleased with our performance. They are a fantastic, consistent team so to hang in there with them and take a set, we’re really pleased with that. We’ve not taken a set off them before and no one else has this week so we’ll take the positives from that.”
Looking ahead to the bronze medal match she added: “We’re playing the Brazilian team we lost to in our pool game for the bronze medal so we’re out for revenge.”
Denise Johns said: “All in all it was a good match today. This week has been brilliant and has produced some of our best matches yet and the crowd support has been really inspiring.”
Johns and Boulton will now face Brazilian pair Vivian and Lima in the bronze medal match at 14:00 today.
