Primary schools in the Causeway Coast and Glens had the opportunity to take part in a Beach Volleyball Festival on East Strand beach in Portrush. A total of 24 teams and over 120 children competed in the 4 v 4 format, coming from Damhead PS, Dunseverick PS, St Patrick’s PS, Ballytober PS, Bush Valley PS, Carnalridge PS and Castleroe PS.
The event was organised by Northern Ireland Volleyball, Fireball Beach Volleyball and Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council in conjunction with the CEV School Project. Stephen McCartney from CCG Sports Development said, “We are delighted with the success of the first ever primary schools beach volleyball event in Northern Ireland. This gave the children an opportunity to experience beach volleyball and showcase our beaches on the north coast as an ideal venue. We will be looking to expand and build on the success of this year’s event.”
The day started with some demos of the skills of beach volleyball lead by the staff of Fireball and Northern Ireland volleyball, before teams got to practice themselves across the 9 beach volleyball courts. Then everyone played in a competition format to determine the winners with an opportunity to referee and prizes also awarded to players showing excellent sportsmanship!

Northern Ireland Volleyball’s Vice President – Joanna McCrory presented the medals and winners’ trophy.
